The year 2022 has been marked by a historic drought. At the end of the summer, we counted 93 departments in drought watch. The Ministry of Ecology calls on the population to reduce its water use by using good reflexes such as: avoid letting water run, limit watering of gardens, use washing machines at full capacity and install water-saving equipment.
The city of LOOS was right in 2021. Indeed, it has been more than a year since a flexible rain water storage tank has been installed in this city of the Nord Pas de Calais.
THE NEEDS OF THE CITY
In the spring of 2021, Gérard Olive, the person in charge of the city’s green spaces, had the idea to call on us for the installation of this flexible tank.
Indeed, before this tank, the gardeners were watering the green spaces with water from the ILEO network. This is a company dedicated to the management of drinking water distribution.
For watering, they need 3 tons of 1,000 liters. This solution was neither ecological nor economical.
Gérard Olive decided to find an alternative. Thanks to him, the city of Loos has become the forerunner in the way of watering beds and trees.
OUR RAIN WATER STORAGE TANK
To meet the needs of watering, we have made for this city a rain water storage tank of 100 000 liters.
This tank recovers rainwater, which was previously discharged into the public sewerage system. For this to work, the tank is connected to a pump, itself connected to the gutter downspouts.
Thus, the rainwater goes directly into the tank.
This product is accessorized with an overflow: in case there is too much water in it, a hose coming from the overflow will allow the evacuation of the liquid.
Once the rainwater has passed through thetank, it can be reused. Indeed, it is sufficient to place a hose in the spigot. This hose will be connected to a pump installed right next to the cistern. From there, gardeners can connect their supply and continue the watering process.
HOW DOES THE CITY OF LOOS REUSE WATER?
The city of Loos has decided to reuse this water in different ways.
First of all, most of it is used to water the city’s technical services with pumps.
Secondly, this water reserve will benefit the people enjoying the shared gardens that are set up behind the Fountain School.
THE ADVANTAGES OF OUR RAIN WATER STORAGE TANK
This flexible solution has several advantages:
-> An ecological advantage:
- reduced use of drinking water
- groundwater is no longer used
- plants are watered with more natural and healthy water
-> An economic advantage:
- 50% savings in water consumption
- solid and durable product in time
- recovery of “free” water
CONCLUSION
This flexible rainwater storage tank has allowed the city of Loos to have access to water during this period of drought.
