For more than 60 years, Pronal has been designing and manufacturing custom-made flexible solutions in France for gas storage and regulation.

Its gas holders are used in agricultural and industrial methanization, scientific research, wastewater treatment, and energy recovery projects.

The project carried out with INRAE’s OPAALE unit highlights Pronal’s French expertise and its commitment to developing sustainable technologies that support the energy transition.

Thanks to their precision, reliability, and adaptability, Pronal gas holders support both public and private stakeholders in implementing practical solutions for biogas storage.

A gas holder developed for INRAE’s OPAALE unit

As part of its research on methanization, the OPAALE unit (Optimization of Processes in Agriculture, Agri-food and Environment), based in Rennes, turned to Pronal for the design of a flexible gas holder with a capacity of 2 m³.

This equipment is intended for a small research-scale methanizer producing around 20 liters of biogas per hour. It ensures the safe storage of the biogas generated during scientific experiments before its controlled combustion, preventing its release into the atmosphere.

This achievement is part of ongoing work on the energy recovery of biomass, carried out in connection with the Closecycle Interreg North Sea project.

A custom and durable design

Entirely manufactured in France at Pronal’s workshops, the 2 m³ gas holder has been custom-designed to integrate seamlessly into the experimental installations of the OPAALE unit.

Its reinforced elastomer membrane, featuring a specific internal coating, ensures complete airtightness, high chemical resistance, and outstanding durability.

The equipment is fitted with a gas inlet and outlet, a safety valve, and a bottom drain for water removal, ensuring safe and stable operation over time.

Compact and lightweight, it can be installed both indoors and outdoors, on a research platform or inside a container, without the need for heavy infrastructure.

An efficient solution for biogas research

The gas holder designed for the OPAALE unit plays an important role in biogas management.
Thanks to its flexible design and high-quality materials, it enhances the safety of installations while helping to reduce the environmental impact of experimental work.

Indeed, it enables the storage and controlled combustion of biogas instead of releasing it into the atmosphere.

This project demonstrates Pronal’s ability to adapt its industrial expertise to meet the needs of scientific and environmental research.

Technical features of the Pronal gas holder

The Pronal gas holder is based on an independent external storage technology, suitable for various types of gases such as biogas, methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, or syngas.

Its flexible NPVC or NBR elastomer membrane ensures perfect impermeability and resistance to pressure and temperature variations.

The gas holder can be customized according to specific requirements. It can be equipped with gas inlet and outlet valves, overpressure safety valves, or condensate drains — all ensuring optimal operation.
In addition, its modular design allows easy integration into various environments: in laboratories, on pilot installations, or within demonstration units.
