In underground mining operations, controlling airflow and limiting dust dispersion are essential for maintaining good working conditions and managing different mining areas. To address these challenges, Pronal has developed a custom-made inflatable pipe plug that enables the temporary compartmentalization of mine galleries while limiting airflow between sections and preventing the spread of dust.
Underground mine galleries require precise control of airflow. Mine ventilation plays a key role in removing dust generated during drilling, mining and ore transportation operations.
However, certain areas must be temporarily isolated to control air currents and prevent dust from spreading to other sections of the mine.
The challenge of isolating and ventilating underground mine galleries

In a mining operation, the layout of underground galleries can make it difficult to install conventional separation systems. Rock walls are irregular, tunnel cross-sections can be large, and requirements evolve as mining operations progress.
Metal doors or rigid partitions require specific modifications to adapt to these environments. Their installation can also be challenging when a temporary barrier is needed.
The objective is therefore to provide a compartmentalization solution that can adapt to the geometry of the galleries while limiting airflow and dust dispersion.
The Pronal solution : an inflatable pipe plug designed for underground mine galleries
To address these challenges, Pronal has designed an inflatable pipe plug or inflatable isolation barrier, specifically developed to isolate different sections of an underground mine.
Positioned inside the gallery, the inflatable pipe plug expands through inflation until it comes into contact with the surrounding walls. Its flexible structure conforms to the irregularities of the rock surface, creating a barrier without requiring the construction of a rigid wall.
The system is supplied by a continuous air blower, which maintains its shape and ensures it remains securely in position during operation, even in the event of a minor puncture. This helps limit air currents and the transfer of dust between compartmentalized areas.
Depending on the operational requirements, several configurations are available, including a fully closed version and a version equipped with an airtight zipper designed as a personnel access passage, allowing occasional entry into the isolated area.

A custom compartmentalization solution for the mining industry
The dimensions and geometry of underground galleries vary depending on the mining sites. Pronal relies on its in-house design and manufacturing capabilities to develop inflatable pipe plugs tailored to each configuration.
Inflatable technology offers an alternative to rigid barriers for certain temporary applications. It facilitates installation in irregular passages and allows the equipment to be dismantled or repositioned according to operational needs.
This solution can be used for the temporary isolation of mine galleries, the separation of work areas, or to limit the spread of dust throughout underground networks.
Through this project, Pronal demonstrates its expertise in designing custom inflatable pipe plugs for the mining industry. The use of technical fabrics enables the system to withstand the constraints of underground environments while providing a solution tailored to the ventilation and compartmentalization needs of mine operators.
