The ecological transition is at the heart of our concerns. Many solutions are researched to reduce the impacts of man on the planet. Today, we will talk about the mission of Earthwake Entreprise: Transform plastic into energy. And, of course, how Pronal helped them realize their project with their innovative solution: the gas holder balloon.

 Needs of Earthwake Entreprise

Earthwake has been working on a project for more than 5 years: an innovative and concrete solution to cope with the ecological crisis. It is a production unit based on the collection and recycling of plastic waste.

Let us explain to you: Today, we count about 11 millions of tons of plastic waste in the oceans. According to Earthwake Entrerpise, we will triple the amount of waste by 2040. Therefore, there is a big threat for the ecosystem. Indeed, in the sea, the plastic is decomposing and is found in the marine food chain.

Therefore, the founders of Earthwake ask themselves an important question : How can we give value to plastic waste ?

They started their research and found a solution: pyrolysis which transforms plastic that can not be recycled into its original state: oil.

To do this, they created an production unit called Chrysalis, composed of 4 containers:

  • Shredding and storage of plastic
  • Pyrolysis of the shredded material and control supervision
  • Storage of utilities including pyrolysis gas
  • Stabilization of the produced gas oil (used, among other things, to feed the trucks intended for the waste collection)

Only one problem was left to solve: How can we store pyrolysis gas ?

GAZOMETRE EARTHWAKE

Our solution: the Gas Holder Balloon

Therefore, Earthwake Entreprise called in Pronal for the storage of the gas? They needed a waterproof and flexible solution that we could put inside of a container.

Inspired by the design of our compensators, we added our know-how in fuel storage (fuel bladder) which asks for a lot of waterproofness.

That is how the gas buffer was created: an elastomer solution with a specific surface to increase the waterproofness of the product. This enables the storage of specific gasses such as CH4, CO2 and Hydrogen.

The gas which comes from the pyrolysis is therefore stored in a close circus in this gas buffer. Then, it is re-injected into the bruner for the heating of the reactor of the pyrolysis. This solution enables the Chryslalis to use the non-condensed gas and to self-feed in warm energy.

Conclusion

After a few weeks of testing, the results turn out to be very conclusive: the gas holder balloon is waterproof and no anomalies were detected by the tools into the container.
