Pronal was asked to create two custom flexible fuel tanks for the restoration of a Fouga Magister CM170. Thanks to our expertise and know-how, we were able to meet this challenge and contribute to the preservation of this aeronautical heritage.

What is a Fouga Magister ?

A Fouga Magister is a two-seat subsonic jet aircraft. It was designed in France in the early 1950s at the request of the French Air Force. This aircraft was mainly used to train future fighter pilots. By the end of the 1950s, it had already trained about ten thousand student pilots.

About a thousand of those planes were built in France and licensed in West Germany, Israel and Finland. It has been put into service by some 20 countries. Finally, the Fouga Magister was able to fly up to 650km/h over a distance of 1000km and at an altitude of 10000m.

The restoration of the Fouga Magister

The association Ailes anciennes, located in Thonon-les-Bains in Haute-Savoie, is currently restoring a Fouga Magister.  As they are not manufactured anymore, the association turned to us for the design of the tanks. Indeed, for this plane, we need two tanks.

The restoration of this plane is complete: from cleaning, to the reassembly of electrical cables and the overhaul of the engine.

Finally, when it is fully restored, it will be used for air shows : the public will be able to climb into the cockpit and discover the complex environment of a military pilot. In addition, the association wishes to put it on display for their museum.

Challenges of fuel tank conception

The lack of plans for the original fuel tanks was a major challenge. However, with our experience and expertise in fuel bladders, we were able to overcome this challenge. We designed and manufactured two custom tanks, adapted to the specificities of the Fouga Magister and in compliance with the association’s requirements.

The production of the custom-made flexible fuel tanks

These two flexible fuel tanks were made to measure to fit the aircraft’s hull perfectly. They were designed to be held in place and filled with fuel in complete safety. Our expertise in creating fuel bladders ensured an ideal solution for the restoration of the Fouga Magister and its future display in the museum.

Conclusion on this project

The client was fully satisfied with our work and the custom fuel tanks we made. These tanks gave life back to this historical aircraft, thus we contribute to the preservation of the aeronautical heritage and to the valorization of the association’s work.
